Design Trends

A trend is the past, present and future. There's really nothing new, only restatement of what has gone before. Trends are only tools, and the important thing is to know which tools to use to build the right product for your client. Many designers resist using design trends because they see them as decorative or superficial. On the other hand, trends can be a wonderful part of the vocabulary we use to create interesting visual material.

Whether or not trends are part of your tool box, good design starts with good judgement in the selection of all elements. A slightly smaller sans serif font that looks cool and stylish in body copy would probably be difficult for older eyes and turn off those customers. There's a difference between updating the design of your marketing materials and being trendy. Keep your customer in mind and make your design decisions based on what you believe will appeal to them.

Good design and copy is not obvious. It catches the eye but should not confuse it. There is nothing extraneous. Every element is inseparably linked.
